‘Tis the Season for Giving

The end of the year is traditionally the season of giving.  Many charities receive the majority of their funding during the holiday season.  Gifting by individuals, foundations, and other non-profits is essential for the continued success of charitable organizations.

Foundation Source notes “This year is different. Several months ago the IRS revoked the charitable status of more than 275,000 U.S. nonprofits. Private foundations that donate to these organizations now can incur a 20% penalty on the amount of each grant.”  They continue:  “Foundation Source lets private foundations quickly and easily verify an organization’s charitable status, then generate the verification certificate required by the IRS to document compliance. Previously reserved for Foundation Source clients, GrantSafe is now available to the entire community of private foundations – free – as part of our mission to facilitate informed and responsible philanthropy. (Registration is required, but the service is free.)”

Charity Navigator is another resource for additional information on some of the charities you may support.
