Health care issues reflect a broader debate in the US. Will the country continue to move toward socialism, stronger federal government, and a European model? Or will the US turn back to its more traditional themes of personal responsibility, free enterprise, and limited government? The writer believes that federal power and central planning have had their day; political and economic constraints, of necessity, will turn the country back to more local, sustainable, “right-sized” systems and processes. Will this sea change occur soon or only after the country has endured harder times and harder lessons? The timing of this sea change will have important implications for cross-border planning.
